Studio time moves fast, and the meter is running. The artists who walk out with finished records aren’t always the most talented — they’re the most prepared. Here’s how to get the most out of every hour you book.
Before your session
- Rehearse until it’s automatic. Know your lyrics, melodies, and ad-libs cold. The booth is for performing, not writing — figuring it out on the clock is the #1 way artists waste money.
- Bring reference tracks. Two or three songs that sound like what you’re going for tell your engineer more in 30 seconds than ten minutes of explaining.
- Prep your files. Have your beat or instrumental ready as a high-quality WAV or MP3, plus a backup on your phone and email. Know the BPM and key if you can.
- Rest your voice and hydrate. Sleep and water do more for your vocal tone than any plugin. Skip dairy and heavy food right before.
- Plan your time. Decide what you want to accomplish — one song done right beats three rushed ones. Book a block that gives you room to breathe.
- Sort the logistics. Confirm your deposit, address, parking, and who’s coming. Most studios cap how many guests you can bring.
During your session
- Warm up first. Spend the first few minutes getting levels and warming up your voice before you go for real takes.
- Trust your engineer. They do this every day. If they suggest another take or a punch-in, it’s to make you sound better.
- Do multiple takes. Even when one feels perfect, grab a couple more. Options in the mix are gold.
- Stay locked in. Keep the room focused and your phone down. Energy and momentum are part of the performance.
After your session
Recording is step one. To make the song competitive, you’ll want it mixed and mastered — that’s where levels get balanced and the track gets its final polish. Ask for your raw files too, so you always own your work. Many artists track and finish in the same room on the same day.
